TEM Junior Hockey – Winter 2018
WELCOME TO 2018
We hope that everyone has had a great Christmas break and is ready for the upcoming hockey season!
This is an introductory email to all of the Juniors from last year, and our various other programs.
As a reminder, these will be the age groups for your children this year (it is based on year of birth):
2000, 2001 U18
2002, 2003 U16
2004, 2005 U14
2006, 2007 U12
2008 or later U10 or U8
We will send some more details to each age group, and also notify you when registration is open but if you have any questions, please contact Ben, Christie or Victor.
TEM will have a new Junior Committee to ensure consistency and support across all the age groups. If you are willing to help as an age group coordinator on this committee, please let us know

PARENT AND PLAYER VOLUNTEERS
There are a number of ways that everyone can be involved:
Team Managers: A manager is required for every team and is responsible for assisting the coach with the organisation of the team, liaising with parents and entering match scores.
Umpires: We supply one umpire (unless provided by Hockey Victoria) for every game. We have a squad of developing junior umpires, and many senior players who also enjoy umpiring, who we use for junior matches. There may be times when an umpire can’t be found and we need to ask a parent to step in.
BBQs: Subject to fixtures, we run fundraising BBQs at home rounds on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. We rely on families donating food supplies and for cooking/serving/cleaning up. This is rotated amongst teams during the season and everyone’s support is always appreciated, no matter how big or small.
Ball kids: U12/U14 players will be asked to act as Ball Kids for our Premier League home games which are generally scheduled on Saturday afternoons. This is a great opportunity to see our top players in action and for everyone to enjoy the friendly club atmosphere at senior home rounds.
HOOK IN2 HOCKEY
TEM will run another introductory Hook In2 Hockey program commencing on Thursday 22 Feb at 5pm and running for 5 weeks before it morphs into the regular training. All ages and abilities are welcome.
As last year, the club will again run a number of programs at a number of local schools as an easier transition to competitive hockey.
TRAINING AND MATCH SCHEDULE – ALL AGE GROUPS
We will field mixed and girls-only teams in each age group of the Hockey Victoria and intraclub competitions in 2017, and welcome back existing and new players of all abilities into each age group.
NOTE: for the first time we are planning on entering an U18 team in the Friday night competition. This is a more social competition for players not keen on playing seniors and is also a special competition where players can bring friends from other clubs. If you are interesting in this competition, please get in touch – we may look to be flexible around commitment and fees if there are enough numbers and perhaps even introduce a pay-per-game structure.
Training proper for the season commences on Wednesday 14 March, with some additional preseason sessions for Shield players commencing on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 February with training times and pitches the same as last year:
- U14s will all train on a Wednesday from 6-7pm from 8 March
- U8s and U10s train on a Thursday from 5-6pm from 9 March
- U12s and U16s train on a Thursday from 6-7pm from 9 March
- U18s will train with the Seniors
Please remember to be at the ground at least 15 minutes prior to any training session for a warm up. With only an hour we want to make the most of each session from the start which is very hard for the coaches if players drift in over the first 10 minutes.
Preseason seniors training
For any Juniors looking to play Seniors this year, or any interested in an U18 comp, you are also welcome to join our Seniors preseason that starts in the first week of Feb. Initially these session are quite fitness focussed with the skills component increasing over time. More details of the schedule can be found at www.temhockey.com/preseason-2018.
Junior Hockey will again run a 14 round competition this year, with a three weeks of finals. Round 1 will be on Friday 27 April and Saturday 28 April. We will organise some practice games in the weeks prior to the start of the season.
Mouthguards and shinpads are required for both training and matches and any player without these will not be allowed on the ground. Mouth guards are available from Just Hockey, pharmacies, sports shops or from your dentist/dental technician.
There will be no formal selection trials for U12/U14/U16 teams. Coaches and selectors will observe pre-season training and grade players over that period. Teams will be kept informed about the process via their respective age group coordinators, who will be the main point of contact. Please refer to the club policies for detailed information regarding selections.
U10 and U8 teams are formed based on friendship groups, sibling arrangements and generally to maintain a balance of ability in each team. While some teams will end up performing better than others, the coaches will endeavour to keep teams balanced.
Uniform and Merchandise
The compulsory Club uniform consists of navy shorts/skort, playing shirt and red TEM club socks. Navy socks are also required for some matches (ie when there is a designated sock clash). All playing uniform is available for purchase at Just Hockey, 279-283 Burke Road, Glen Iris, phone: 9885 7050.
Over the next couple of years we will be transitioning from the old junior shirt to a small version of the seniors shirt so both shirts can be worn by juniors. However, if your son/daughter has aspirations to play seniors, we recommend the purchase of a seniors shirt.
Optional, but very popular, items of clothing include the club hoodie and club rugby top. These are available for purchase online via the TEM website.
Hockey Victoria requires each junior club to develop junior umpires as part of the Umpire Development Program. The Club strongly supports this program and encourages all junior players to better understand the Rules of hockey.
All junior umpires will be coached and are supported to attain official Hockey Victoria accreditation. Umpires are paid for each game dependent on their experience, the difficulty of the game and their level of accreditation.
Please contact the Junior Umpire Coordinator, Pip Dudley, if you have any queries or your children are interested in umpiring this year. Email firstname.lastname@example.org
U8 AND U10 INTRA-CLUB COMPETITION
The U10 competition, for children born in 2006-2008, will again be run between Central Flames Zone clubs TEM, MCC, MHSOB, Hawthorn and Powerhouse/St Kilda Hockey Clubs. Due to a shortage of available pitches within the zone on Saturday mornings, the competition will be based on quarter pitches. The venue will be either H1/H2 or Melbourne High School, and the start time will usually be 11:15am.
There is also a requirement that all hockey clubs offer a strong intra-club competition at the U8 age group, ie born in 2009 or later. The intra-club competition suits young players transitioning from Hook In2 Hockey and those families unable to make the traditional Saturday morning U10 time-slots.
All U8 intra club games will be part of the Thursday afternoon training session. Under the guidance of club coaching director Victor Romagosa, we will have small teams playing modified small pitch games for the second half of every training session. We will also hold 2 Sunday morning events per term with Doncaster Hockey Club, as a way of gaining some experience in playing in different formats and at different venues.
INDIVIDUAL REGISTRATIONS AND FEES
TEM is finally fees for 2018, but as in prior years, all Junior and Intra-Club players will be required to additionally register directly with Hockey Victoria and pay the relevant fee. For 2018 the levy is $43 for an U10 (born 2008 or later) and $65 for other juniors.
The Individual HV Registration payment which will vary this year according to age group and covers:
